Albert Lee Schoonover was born on February 8, 1942, in American Fork, Utah to Eldon and Evelyn Bezzant Schoonover. Lee cherished his years growing up in Pleasant Grove, spending time with his family on his grandma and grandpa’s farm. He learned how to work hard, picking all kinds of fruit with his brother. He was an excellent athlete, playing basketball, football, baseball, and tennis at Pleasant Grove High School. He went on to play basketball and tennis at Snow College and then played basketball at Westminster College. His years at Snow were some of his favorite years. He still has many cherished friends from that time. He met his sweetheart, Marian Lay Schoonover, while at Snow. She was a cheerleader, and she stole his heart when he heard her play the guitar and sing at an event in Maple Canyon. They were married in the Manti Temple on a snowy day on December 12, 1961. They had a quick overnight honeymoon in Nephi, because he had to be back for finals the next morning. Lee and Marian had four children; Marilee (Rick) Poulson, Gary Schoonover, John (Sidnie) Schoonover, and Paula (Matt) Evans. They have 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Each and every one of his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids can all say that they were his favorite. He had a gift of making each one feel like they were the most important person.
Lee was the very definition of a person that would “show up”. He was at every ball game, recital, graduation, wedding, farewell, and any other event that his family was a part of. He was our biggest fan, loudest cheerleader, most knowledgeable coach, and supplier of snacks. He never missed an opportunity to tell us how proud he was of us. He was the greatest dad, grandpa, friend, neighbor, and person. He has touched so many lives through his kindness, sense of humor, generosity, and big personality.
Lee had a successful career, working for IBM. This gave him opportunities to move quite a few times around the country with his family. They lived in Las Vegas, NV, Riverside, CA, Atlanta, GA, Fountain Valley, CA, and finally in Fairview Utah, following his retirement. He made great friends in every city that they lived in, and he was able to provide a great life for his family. Whatever he had, he shared with everyone. He was generous, and taught us all so much about giving and serving. We have all observed his quiet acts of service over the years, and he has showed us all, through his example, what it is to follow Christ. He especially showed this as he tenderly cared for our mom for so many years. He has blessed so many.
Lee cherished his family. We have had so many fun trips together, creating memories. Boating and skiing at Lake Powell, Easters at Lake Mead, taking the boat out fishing in the ocean, snowmobiling and 4 wheeling along the Skyline, fun at the cabin and out on Strawberry, and so many fun times just being at their home. He always made every gathering fun and made sure we all had everything we needed to make it memorable.
He was a golfer. He has tried to convince every one of us to take up golf. How lucky we have been to spend time with grandpa on the golf course. He has really loved golf so much since retirement. He has had the greatest golf buddies. Most recently, he has had his Badger golf group that he always looked forward to joining up with at Palisades golf course, his home away from home. He has truly been blessed with great friends.
Lee is survived by his wife Marian, his children Gary, John, and Paula, and son-in-law Rick Poulson, 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, as well as his siblings, Jay, Paul, and Janice. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Marilee Poulson, and his grandson, Kyle Poulson.
