Gladys passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025 at 99 and one-half years old.
She was born on April 7, 1926 to Luther and Minnie Howell Dixon in Norman Park, Georgia as the second youngest of seven children. She grew up on her parents' farm in south Georgia where her love of animals developed that she kept throughout her life, especially her cats. In her later years she spoke about her dad hooking up the mules to the cart and riding to town where she would get a large bag of candy for a nickel. After high school she moved to Atlanta for her first job. A few years later she moved to Milwaukee where she met Paul Gunn. They were married in Chicago on May 1, 1946. They lived in several places but eventually settled in Orlando with their three children around 1960.
She worked as a secretary where she became a certified professional secretary. She also held a Florida Real Estate License. Gladys worked for many years at the Better Business Bureau in Orland to before getting her Real Estate License, She worked at the United Negro College Fund for several years until they closed the office in Orlando. She also worked for Amerifirst Mortgage Company. After she retired, she lived with family in Tennessee, Florida, Montana, and Utah. She enjoyed living in the mountains in Montana with Tammy, Dave, and numerous animals. Tammy selflessly cared for her for many years which meant a lot to Gladys and rest of the family. Upon moving back to Utah she was able to spend time with her daughter Teri who did not leave her side for the last days of her life.
She enjoyed painting, making quilts, sewing, reading, hiking the Appalachian Trail, and genealogy research. Gladys did extraction for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for over 20 years. She was able to sell several of her paintings. Gladys enjoyed making quilts for her family and entering them into fairs. She also loved listening to classical music and taught herself to play the piano and several other instruments such as the dulcimer, which she became pretty good at.
She loved her family with all of her heart and always looked forward to visits.
She was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Kissimmee, Florida on February 27, 1983. Later in life she was sealed to her husband Paul.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband (Paul Gunn), all of her siblings (Belle, Blanche, Delmar, Clinton, Ruth, Edward) and her daughter-in-law Colleen. She is survived by her daughter Sandy (Neal) Davis, son Dennis Gunn, daughter Teri (Steve) Mitchell, grandchildren Dave (Tammy) Daughtry, Tim (Kori) Mitchell, Jennifer (Marc) Finlayson, Stefanie Gunn, Jon (Katerin) Gunn, Ashley (Andrew Jordan) Gunn, great grandchildren DeAnna, Paige, Isaac, Quinn, Kye, Lukas, Rieken, Hannah, Martina, and great great grandchildren Pearl, Ruth, and CoraLee.
Graveside services will be held at the Fairview Cemetery in Fairview, Utah on Monday November 10, 2025 at 11:00am.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers and staff of the GoodLife Senior Living and Memory Care in Elmo. They went above and beyond to take care of her during the last year. She always said that they took great care of her and treated her like family and she could not ask for more.
