Listen to Obituary

Mildred Helen Thompson Swensen, 82, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at her home in Fairview after a short illness. Helen was born on May 18, 1943, in Livingston, Polk County, Texas, to Mildred Helen Pridgen Thompson and Luther Cade Thompson Sr.

Helen graduated from Cleveland High School in 1961. She continued her education and received a Bachelor's Degree in history with a minor in biology. She also received a Master’s Degree in religious education in 1967. While living in Salt Lake City, she met Curly (Carl) Swensen, as they were living in the same ward. They were married in Cleveland, San Jacinto County, Texas, on May 10, 1977, and were later sealed in the Manti, Utah, Temple. They had been married 20 years when Curly passed away on October 8, 1997.

Curly and Helen moved to Fairview, Utah, in 1977, where they owned Curly’s Dairy Freeze, home of the “Curly Burger” and the “Buffalo Burger,” from 1977 to 1989. Helen worked at the North Sanpete Middle School from 1988 to 2001 as a librarian/aide. Curly and Helen also monitored the weather in Fairview for KSL news when Mark Eubank was the weatherman.

Helen joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1967 while in Kentucky. She faithfully served as a ward librarian, and she and Curly served together as ordinance workers in the Manti Temple.

In 2008, Brian and Miko Howarth and their children, Heather and Seth, became neighbors with Helen. A lasting friendship was formed, and they soon adopted each other as family. The loving care provided by their family was a great blessing to Helen in her final days.

Helen is survived by her brother, Luther Thompson of Whitewater, Colorado; her nephew, Travis Thompson of Missoula, Montana; her niece, Chandra Mills (Eric) of Renton, Washington; and her soon-to-be great niece. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband.
