Jim J Stanworth

Jim J. Stanworth, 72, passed away peacefully at his home in Delta on June 27, 2026, surrounded by family.

Jim was born on July 23, 1953, in Delta, Utah, to Alfred Duane and Illa Etta Maxwell Stanworth. He was the youngest of five children and graduated from Delta High School.

Jim married D’Ann Peterson, and together they welcomed two beautiful daughters, Sharee and Niki. Their marriage later ended in divorce.

On July 9, 2000, Jim called Cherie for the first time. They talked as though they had known each other for years. They went on their first date on July 11, 2000, and both knew they had found home in each other. They were married on September 6, 2000. Their marriage was solemnized in the St. George Utah Temple on March 24, 2007.

Jim often said that when he married Cherie, he gained three more children, whom he loved as his own. They were soon calling him Dad, a title he treasured.

From a young age, Jim learned the value of hard work from his father and his Uncle Earl. He spent many years farming and raising livestock, and he especially loved raising sheep. Jim worked hard, enjoyed life fully, and had plenty of stories to share from a life lived with energy, humor, and purpose.

Hunting was one of Jim’s greatest passions. Whether pursuing deer, elk, antelope, or small game, he felt most at home in the desert. Until his early forties, Jim loved riding dirt bikes for any reason—for fun, for hunting, or for racing at the Cherry Creek competitions. His adventurous spirit, competitive nature, and love for the outdoors remained part of who he was throughout his life. Many cherished memories were made on hunting trips with family and friends.

If Jim were writing his own obituary, he would likely begin with the words he spoke with honesty and humility: “Hi, my name is Jim, and I’m an alcoholic.” His sobriety birthday was January 10, 1998. For more than 28 years, he remained deeply grateful for the strength he received from his Heavenly Father and Savior in overcoming addiction. His testimony of recovery inspired many, and he willingly shared hope with those facing similar struggles.

While living in Cedar City, Jim became silver-certified in STIHL chainsaw repairs and developed a reputation for his skill and willingness to help others. During this time, he also became active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jim and Cherie later served together as service missionaries in the Church’s Addiction Recovery Program, a calling that was especially meaningful to him because of his own journey. He loved serving and encouraging those seeking recovery and healing.

In January of 2014, Jim and Cherie returned to Delta, where he continued repairing chainsaws and small engines. Believing in paying kindness forward, Jim typically charged only for parts and donated his labor. He also faithfully served as Ward Mission Leader and found great joy in reaching out to others.

Jim faced many health challenges over the last ten years. Despite chronic pain and declining health, he met each day with courage, determination, and quiet strength. He continued to serve others whenever he could, rarely complained, and looked for ways to help those around him. His resilience and selflessness were an inspiration to all who knew him.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, David and Max Stanworth; sister and best friend, Janet Pearson; and son, Kevin Souter.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Cherie Stanworth; daughters, Sharee (Gene) Rogers of Delta, Niki (Steven) Bolinder of Grantsville, and Megan Owens (Trent Wood) of Price; son, Kelly Souter of St. George; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and dear friends.

Jim will be remembered for his thoughtful ways, generous heart, steady leadership, quiet strength, endless stories, humor, and the wonderful meals he shared with those he loved. Jimmy, you may be gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 31, at 11:00 a.m. at the Delta First Ward, 222 West 200 North, Delta, Utah. A visitation will be held Thursday, July 30, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., and again Friday morning from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. before the service.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Hospice for their compassionate care and support. They also wish to thank family, friends, and the Delta community for the many expressions of love shown through visits, phone calls, flowers, cards, prayers, and acts of kindness. Special thanks are extended to the Delta First Ward Relief Society and Rasmussen Mortuary for their loving service.
