Joan Selman VanLeeuwen, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and dedication. Born on September 12, 1931, in Benjamin, Utah to Royal R and Rebecca Olsen Selman, Joan grew up with strong family values and a deep appreciation for community. She graduated from Payson High School at the age of 18, setting the foundation for a life marked by resilience and achievement.
Joan married her first husband, Duane Goudy, in Payson, Utah and was sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple. Together, they built a beautiful family and were blessed with five children. Joan devoted herself to her family while pursuing her passion for beauty and style. After earning her associate degree in cosmetology, she became a skilled professional and later an instructor, sharing her expertise with others. Her talent and creativity led her to compete in hair competitions, where she earned numerous trophies—so many that she eventually retired from competing because she had mastered every challenge.
Life brought both joy and sorrow. Joan faced the heartbreaking loss of Duane on December 21, 1973, yet her strength and faith carried her forward. On October 19, 1974, Joan married Raymond VanLeeuwen, and together they gratefully merged their families. Their union was a testament to love, resilience, and the beauty of second chances. Joan and Ray later moved to Mt. Pleasant, Utah, where they continued to build a life filled with warmth and purpose.
A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joan lived her beliefs through service and gratitude. She cherished her role in the community and found joy in helping others. Her kindness, grace, and unwavering faith touched countless lives.
Joan is survived by her children and step-children, John Goudy, Dennis Goudy, Merleann Sullivan, Mark Goudy, Kirk VanLeeuwen, Spencer VanLeeuwen, Joel VanLeeuwen, James VanLeeuwen, sister Mary Boswell. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Duane Goudy and Raymond VanLeeuwen; her parents; numerous siblings; and her son, Arlan Goudy and step-daughter Lori VanLeeuwen. She leaves behind her children, stepchildren, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren who will forever treasure her memory and example.
