Neva Beck Black passed away on May 26, 2025–Memorial Day. She was 93 years old and lived a life of caring and service. She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her family and all who knew and loved her.
Neva was born on February 7, 1932 to Osmer Hayes Beck and Sarah Phyllis Sorensen in Spring City, Utah. She cherished her childhood in the close-knit farming community, especially riding horses to her father’s sheep camp. In high school, her intelligence and leadership helped her become the Studentbody Secretary and valedictorian of her graduating class.
After graduation, she moved to the ‘big city’ of Salt Lake, where she lived in the Beehive House and worked as a secretary for General Mills. It was there that friends introduced her to Boyd Black from Magna, who had recently returned from military service–and had a flashy new convertible. Their love story blossomed, and they were married in the Manti Temple on November 14, 1952.
Together, they settled in Magna, where they began their family of four children–three daughters and one son. Later, they built a home in Sandy, where they lived for 53 years. Neva was a loving wife for 72 years and a devoted mother and grandmother. Family was important to her, and she took great pride in their activities and accomplishments.
She loved to care for and serve her family, and was happy to lend a hand with her grandchildren, which was very much appreciated. She lovingly cared for Boyd until his passing last October. Beyond her home, Neva also dedicated time and service to the Sandy Senior Center, earning a place on the Volunteer Wall of Fame.
Neva was an avid reader and she loved to travel. In retirement, she and Boyd travelled and shared many adventures. They also enjoyed camping, golfing, and playing cards with friends.
Neva had an unwavering positive spirit. She truly saw the good in everything and was content with what she had, always believing that “it will be OK”. We will miss her optimistic attitude and faith.
Heartfelt thanks are extended to all of the caring neighbors and friends for their love and support, as well as the compassionate caregivers at the Mountain View Hospital in Payson and from Enhabit Hospice.
Neva is survived by her children: JoAnn (David) Tuttle, Jane (Kerry) Ward, Jake (Michelle) Black, and Jean (Larry) Colosimo; seven grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren; and her sister ReNee Wagstaff and sister-in-law Sandra Beck. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers, two sisters, and her grandchild, Adam Colosimo.
A graveside service to remember Neva’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 6, 2025 at the Spring City Cemetery on Highway 117, with visitation at 10:30 am.
