Stephen Jensen Mitchell

Steve passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026, at 74 years old.

He was born on November 6, 1951, to Reuel Greene Mitchell and Roma Von Jensen in Salt Lake City, Utah as the oldest of two children. He grew up in his parents’ house at 1300 East and Murphy’s Lane in Salt Lake City that was later rebuilt by Reuel and Steve. During his time in high school and after he and his father built many of the metal buildings in Rock Springs, Wyoming. In their free time, they enjoyed visiting old mining towns and looking for old bottles. He pursued an associate’s degree in sheet metal work and work throughout the United States. During this time in Wyoming, he worked with Paul Gunn and Dennis Gunn, who later became his father-in-law and brother-in-law. Dennis introduced his younger sister, Teri Gunn, to Steve. After a short courtship Steve and Teri got married on June 26, 1976, in Rock Springs, Wyoming.

After about a year and half of marriage, they welcomed their first child, Timothy. Tim was born in Salt Lake City, even though they lived in Superior Wyoming. After about one year, they moved to Columbia Falls, Montana. On January 12, 1980, they welcomed their second child, Jennifer. Jenn was born at their home in Columbia Falls. The family stayed in Montana until 1985 when they moved to Orlando, Florida to be close to Teri’s family. In 1986, the family decided to begin attending the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah as a child. Steve and Teri were sealed in the Atlanta, Georgia temple on their 11th wedding anniversary on June 26, 1987.

In 1992, the family moved back to Salt Lake City, Utah to be near Steve’s family. Steve fulfilled many roles in the church including a scout master. He also served in the Salt Lake temple as an ordinance worker and served two missions in the substance abuse and recovery mission.

In 1997, Steve and Teri moved to Sanpete County, first to Manti, then a couple of years later to Fairview. During his time in Fairview, he served another mission in the substance abuse and recovery mission in the Gunnison prison and served as a temple worker in the Manti for many years. He was involved with starting both of the missions in the areas that he served in.

He enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting, camping, and spending time with his family. He loved his family very much and always looked forward to visits. He had a kind heart, was a mentor to all that knew him, and was led by his example. He will be missed by all that knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother (Lane Mitchell). He is survived by his wife Teri, son Timothy (Kori) Mitchell, daughter Jennifer (Marc) Finlayson, grandchildren Quinn Clevenger, Kye Clevenger, Paige Mitchell, Lukas Clevenger, Isaac Mitchell, Rieken Clevenger, great grandchild and nephew Eric Mitchell.

Funeral services will be held at the Mt. Pleasant Stake Center on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at 11:00am with a viewing held prior at 9:30am. Graveside services at the Fairview Cemetery will follow the funeral services.
